Welcome to our weekly Newsletter! We hope you all had a delightful and delicious Thanksgiving! This week we call out a few comics we think might get some attention at this weekend’s Brazil Comic-Con, we highlight a couple of books that got optioned, and showcase a great gap book to dig for. Enjoy!
COVRPRICE DAILY SHAKERS
SHAKER: JOKER #3 (DC, 1975) Thanks to the Joker film, a CGC 9.8 of this book hit a new high of $899.99, which blows a 2016 9.8 sale of $155.35 way out of the water. This is a fantastic gap book. NM raw copies sell for $20 to $30, so the key is looking out for high-grade copies of this and the rest in this first Joker series. Grading is a must and can really pay off. SHAKER: MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS / TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 – RETAILER APPRECIATION VARIANT (IDW, 2019) It’s fun to call out new “hot” variants, and this was the one for this week. It hit a high raw value of $65 on the 3rd and has settled to $45. Now, whether or not this is a good valuation all depends on how much your LCS sold it for. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: SECRET WARS 2099 #1 RON LIM 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2015) If you’re following the Marvel 2099 event, then know that the 2099 Captain America is Roberta Mendez, who makes her first appearance in this issue (and is also on the cover for this variant). Amazing Spider-Man editor Nick Lowe has been on record saying that this 2099 future is more than just “possible,” leading fans to expect to see more of her in the near future. Regardless of the plans, this variant hit a high price of $93 raw. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: SHADOWMAN #13 SHANE DAVIS 1:50 VARIANT (VALIANT, 2013) Valiant fans are die-hard collectors and will pay handsomely for tough to find variants. This one is no exception. Not many shops are ordering 50 copies of Shadowman, making this particular one quite challenging to find. So this week’s new high sale of $550 for a CGC 9.8 is quite notable. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI #4 – ROD REIS 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2018) Star Wars variants are SUPER fickle on the aftermarket, yet this one is standing strong still with this week’s $75 raw sale. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: SPIDER-MAN & VENOM: DOUBLE TROUBLE #2 PEACH MOMOKO 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2019) There’s an interesting trend of Venom/Spidey mini-series (like this) having 1:25 hit triple ratio or more (i.e., selling for 3 times the ratio value). We’re not sure if retailers are as burnt out on Venom as many collectors are, but stores are under ordering these and therefore demand for this hard to find variant are now hitting like this week’s $75 raw sale. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: SUPERIOR CARNAGE #1 MARCO CHECCHETTO 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL, 2013) This creepy Carnage cover is really starting to pick up with this week’s $75 raw sale. What’s amazing is how 9.8’s have recently started selling for $90 and $125. So, expect to see a shift in 9.8 prices. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
SHAKER: SUPERMAN/BATMAN #4 GERMAN TURNER VARIANT (DC, 2003) This is probably the most valuable Michael Turner cover out there. And it just hit a new high sale of $2,250 for a CGC 9.8 blue label. We actually like the Aspen SDCC virgin variant (which reuses the same image) a bit better. However, you can’t beat the original in terms of rarity and demand. (Find on eBay)
SHAKER: UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 1:75 GRANOV SCARLET WITCH VARIANT (MARVEL, 2012) We’re big fans of Adi Granov’s work and this is by far one of our favorite covers of his. For years, the 1:75 had a hard time meeting ratio prices (it was always stuck around $50). Yet, it’s been trending for a while now, with raw sales hitting over $100 and this week’s new highest sale ever of $325 for a CGC 9.8. Now may be a good time to pick up a copy. SHAKER: UNCANNY INHUMANS #11 1:25 PUTRI VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016) Often, new characters’ first appearances hit the market hard and heat up immediately only to be forgotten months/years later. Mosaic was one of these. However, this 1:25 Putri variant has dried up and currently sells for a premium, like this week’s raw sale of $56. Currently listed copies are well over $100. This is one of the best examples of watching our daily Shakers or Hot Comics to see what jumps out of the blue. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
TUMBLER: NAOMI #1 (DC, 2019) As we mentioned with Mosaic above, Naomi was a HUGE deal earlier this year (She was on our Top 10 List weekly for a while). 9.8’s went completely bonkers at the end of April 2019 with a high of $587.77. As more 9.8’s came to market, prices dropped by mid-May and sales have been coming down ever since. The most recent 9.8 sale went for $115. Raw’s were going for more back in that April sweet spot for $140 and now are selling for $40 to $50. Keep in mind, that even though this was a big drop, $40 to $50 for a new character a year later is still a pretty solid price. If it hadn’t been SO high, it would even be considered a fantastic price. This one is another great example of timing the market and keeping track of your collection. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
RUMORED / OPTIONED
RUMORED/OPTIONED: KILL WHITEY DONOVAN #1 (DARK HORSE, 2019) Per an article in DEADLINE, ‘Kill Whitey Donovan’ Comic Series In Works As Movie At Hideout Pictures; Sigrid Gilmer Set To Adapt”. This JUST came out and has a while to go before it’s released, so you have some time to track down a copy for the price you want. It’s still pretty reasonable as well, with the main cover selling for $10 and the variant for $12. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
RUMORED/OPTIONED: LOCKE & KEY (IDW, 2008) Netflix announced that this series will be released on February 7th, 2020. That news helped one raw sale for the first print to sell for $174.95. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
WHAT THE WATCHER WATCHES
Brazil Comic-Con is this weekend (Dec. 5th to 8th), which has been rumored to be ripe with new Marvel Film & TV news. There WILL be several announcements that will push several books into big price jumps. So, this week we’re watching a lot of Marvel books. The ones most on our mind are (and keep in mind, we’re guessing here):
WATCHING: INCREDIBLE HULK #449 (MARVEL, 1997): This issue is the first appearance of the THUNDERBOLTS. Going into this weekend, this team has had the loudest rumors and expectations. The most recent 9.8’s sold for $265, which seems like a great deal if news does hit. The highest sale ever was for $400 for a 9.8 back in May 2019. If Marvel confirms the Thunderbolts, this will be a $500 9.8 by Tuesday. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
WATCHING: YOUNG AVENGERS #1 (MARVEL, 2005): We still believe that this particular comic may just be the most important book for Phase 4. It’s a no brainer as it’s packed with first appearances for younger versions of older Avengers that are coming to the end of contracts or have already departed the franchise. Right now, a first print 9.8 sells for around $200. If more characters from this series are announced (let alone anything titled “YOUNG AVENGERS”), then this book is going to make a big leap in price… also sending the variants into insane amounts. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
WILD CARDS: THE SENTRY, DARKHAWK Both of these are big, fan-favorite characters that no one is expecting to see right now… which are exactly the types of books that tend to explode the most when content is announced. These are not very likely and already command decent amounts in 9.8 (Sentry does VERY well with raw values as well). We don’t expect to see these characters hit with this weekend’s news, but what if they did? Regardless, it’s what we’re definitely watching.
KEY OF THE WEEK:
KEYS: WONDER WOMAN #204 (DC, 1973) We end this week’s review with the 1st appearance of Nubia. The first 9.6 to hit eBay sold for $613.62. There’s only fourteen 9.6’s on the CGC census and four 9.8’s. (Where 9.4 is the most common grade) Keep an eye out for this one. (Find on eBay) (Find on MCS)
